Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

What Do You Need To Know?

The Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was established with the purpose of poverty alleviation in the state of Wyoming. The program provides nutritious food that meets the standard dietary requirements to the poor households. In this way, the program helps to improve the health conditions of individuals and families from underprivileged backgrounds. The Department of Family Services (DFS) administers the program.

In Wyoming, three out of five individuals receive the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Families who are under 130% of the federal poverty level are eligible to apply for the Wyoming SNAP.

Program Objectives

The main goal of the program is to make healthy and nutritious food accessible to the poor and low-income families who are citizens of Wyoming State by financing their food expenses. This allows families to improve their standard of living by educating citizens about the importance of healthy food and food preparation. Through the program, the eligible candidates receive nutritionist food and improve their diet.

Eligible families are provided with an electronic card known as the EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card which they can use to purchase food from the retail stores that accept the EBT card as authorized by the government.

What food items you can buy?

Foods that can be bought using the Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are,

  • Cereals
  • Fruits
  • Bread
  • Dairy product
  • Vegetable and other such items
  • Healthy salads, sandwiches

What food items are forbidden?

The eligible households are forbidden to buy certain products using Wyoming SNAP like

  • Medicines
  • Hot restaurant food
  • Paper food
  • Cleaning products
  • Cosmetics
  • Beverages, alcohol, and tobacco
  • Instantly consumable food

Are You Eligible?

The applicant needs to meet the following requirements to be able to apply for the Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,

  • The candidate has to be a permanent resident of Wyoming to be eligible for the program
  • The candidate must have a US citizenship or a legal alien to receive the SNAP benefits
  • The candidate must have a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • The candidate must have a job ( an exception is made if the age of the candidate lies between the age of 21-59, is pregnant, physically not fit for work or disabled)
  • They must have a current bank balance under $2,001
  • They must have a current bank balance under $3,001 and share the household with either
    • A person aged 60 and above, or
    • A disabled person ( child, wife/husband,  a parent or your own self)

Other important elements are considered while evaluating the eligibility of the candidate for the Wyoming SNAP program include

  • Number of members in the household
  • Total gross income of the household

The amount of the maximum gross income level before taxes should be equal or less than,

In case, the household size is greater than eight members, an additional amount of $7293 is considered per member. The amount of annual income level might change time to time depending on the changes in laws and regulations. Therefore, you should keep in touch with your local managing agencies to get recent information regarding the Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). 

You can also visit the official Wyoming SNAP website to check if you qualify for the program. The applicant you will be asked to mention certain information including

  • Household income
  • VA and social security payments
  • Utility bill
  • Child support expenses
  • Day-care expenses
  • Medical bills, if you are older than 60, or disabled
  • Other benefit programs you have applied to
  • Any other payments

How To Apply

You can use various methods to apply for the Wyoming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It is important to check your eligibility for the program before applying. The different methods you can use to apply are,

  • Apply Online

You can make your application online by visiting the Department of Family Service official website.

Here you will be provided with all the necessary information about the SNAP program. The website provides easy and fast online services to the citizens of Wyoming. You can find the application form and apply for the SNAP program. It is important to fill the application as accurately and truthfully as possible because providing false information can lead you to penalties. Once the application is submitted you cannot change it hence it is advisable to be careful while filling out the application form.

Once you have filled out the application form you can return it to food stamp office either by email, mail or fax.

  • Apply through the local office

To apply for the Wyoming Food Stamp Program (SNAP) in person, you can visit the nearby Department of Family Services office in your community.  The SNAP representative in the office will provide you with the application form and any other information about the program. Once you complete the application you can then submit it along with the other required documents.
