What You Need To Know

Medicaid is an extensive health insurance program that provides benefits to a wide range of people. In Connecticut, it is run by the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) to provide health-related facilities to both families with low-income and individuals who are living below a certain poverty level. The Connecticut state government and the Federal government of the United States work together to run the Medicaid program. The awardees of the program comprise of diverse groups of residents of Connecticut. The programs provide health care services to;

  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • Parents
  • Guardians/caretaker relatives
  • Senior citizens
  • Parents with no dependent kids
  • Disabled people

The Connecticut Medicaid program is targeted towards families and individuals with low household income who are unable to cover their medical dues. People from the underprivileged background are incapable of paying expensive medical dues as a result of the high cost of health care. The goal of the program is to reach out to such people and provide protection against the expensive medical bill so that they can live a healthy and zestful life.

In Connecticut, Medicaid can be divided into four types:

  • HUSKY A gives healthcare coverage to children and their parents/caretakers with household income  below 185% of the poverty level and pregnant women with income less than 250% of the poverty level
  •  HUSKY B which is the Connecticut CHIP program, it provides health care for children whose parents income is more than 185% of the federal poverty line
  • HUSKY C provides healthcare benefits to older, disabled and blind people
  • HUSKY D includes single adults who don’t have any dependent child to look after and have an income level that is below 56% of the federal poverty level.

What does it cover?

There are a wide variety of health care services that come under the Connecticut Medicaid program including:

  • Home care
  • Nursing and hospital care
  • Laboratory test and x-rays
  • Eye care

Medicaid also covers mental health and other therapy services if they are being provided in a hospital setting.

Program Requirements

The most important requirements of the Connecticut Medicaid programs require the candidate to be a US citizen with legal or permanent citizenship and most importantly a residence of the state of Connecticut. Your eligibility is automatically canceled if you lack any of the above-mentioned requirements. Besides that, the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) which is responsible for providing the health care services takes into account two important factors which are,

  • Size of the household
  • Total income of the household per annum before taxes

The total annual household income before taxes should not exceed by
